From the most ancient to the most developed societies, health has been perceived to be related to peace, happiness, social connections and social support (1). Its importance is reflected by the primary roles played first by healers and shamans and later by medical doctors. For the former, the word ‘health’ conjured up something magical while for the latter it is associated with knowledge. Over time, we have redefined the magic associated with healing and restoring as ‘indigenous knowledge’.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fernando Albericio is Research Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Barcelona.
His major research interests cover practically all aspects of peptide synthetic methodology as well as synthesis of peptides and small molecules with therapeutic activities (cancer and infectious diseases). Lately, he has been working in greening the solid-phase peptide synthesis processes.
He has published more than 1000 scientific articles, graduated more than 75 Ph.D. students, and filled more than 65 patents.
