Sustainability – What Does it Mean for Excipient Makers and Users

ABSTRACT

IPEC, an industry association of manufacturers, distributors and users of excipients is about to publish an updated draft version of its Excipient Information Package – User Guide and Templates. This new version will include a new part to facilitate and standardise the exchange of Sustainability information covering the very broad range of aspects dealing with Corporate Social Responsibility and Environment, Social and Governance.
This article provides a heads-up and a call out for your feedback when a draft version is ready for review.

INTRODUCTION: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) AND ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL & GOVERNANCE (ESG)
In 2015, all member states of the United Nations adopted “The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The ultimate goal is to end poverty by improving health and education, reducing inequality and spur economic growth and in the meantime tackle climate change and preserving our natural resources.

 

The centre piece of this work is a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is crystal clear that these goals can only be achieved if all stakeholders cooperate in a true global partnership.

 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Geertrui Haest is Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Manager EMEA at Cargill. Cargill has a broad range of products supplied to the pharmaceutical industry, both as excipients or active pharmaceutical ingredients.
She has more than three decades of experience in product development, application support to customers and regulatory support for EMEA markets.
She is an expert member of the carbohydrate working party of the EDQM and as such she is involved in the development of carbohydrate product monographs in the Ph. Eur.
As a member of IPEC Europe’s Quality and Regulatory Affairs working group, she is part of the team compiling IPEC’s new Sustainability chapter for the IPEC Excipient Information Package Guide.
